XI – That Hero Otter Chapter XI is one of the great "turning‑point" chapters in the novel—an explosive blend of stealth, courage, and moral stakes. It belongs entirely to Otter. Leonard and Soa discover Otter's clothes abandoned near the dike, prompting Soa to whisper, "The Black One has deserted us." Leonard refuses to believe it—and moments later, Otter proves why. From the water's surface, Leonard sees a ripple, "something gleamed in the ripple like to the flash of steel," and then the sentry vanishes beneath the water. Otter has executed a silent, perfect kill—dragging the guard into the depths and stamping him into the mud. His retelling of the act is chilling and triumphant: "Wow!
