Health: HIV PEP * HIV PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is emergency medicine taken after a possible HIV exposure to prevent infection. * Start PEP immediately, ideally within 2 hours but within no more than 72 hours (3 days) of exposure. After 72 hours, the medicine cannot stop the virus. * Requires taking a course of tablets for 28 days. * For people who are HIV-negative or do not know their status. * Primarily for emergencies like condom breaks, shared needles, or sexual assault. * Get it at the emergency room, urgent care, or a sexual health clinic right away. * In some states, pharmacists can also prescribe PEP. * Highly effective but not 100% effective * Not for daily use - PEP is only for emergencies.
