Blessed Are Those Who Mourn

About this episode

This episode discusses the concept of mourning in relation to sin and spiritual poverty as presented in the Beatitudes.

Blessed are those who mourn. Mourning is defined as the outward social expression of grief, and that's consistent with the idea behind the word that Jesus uses in this text. Usually when we think of grieving and mourning, we tend to think of death. We think of losing someone. But this text isn’t about death or loss. This type of mourning is about sin. We know this because of the context of the Beatitudes. Last week we talked about spiritual poverty – spiritual bankruptcy. It’s not about what’s in your bank account, it’s about what’s in your heart. Same with mourning. Sin is a really big deal to God – if we can mourn our sin we’ll agree with God. And that’s a good place to be.
