About this episode

Andrew Hook discusses the themes of exhaustion and renewal through the lens of Elijah's experiences in the Bible.

The weekly message from Community Church Edinburgh. This talk is from Sunday, 12th Jul 2026. Andrew Hook continues our summer series ‘Open Eyes, Open Heart’ with a talk ‘Stew and Stupor’, looking at a Deric Bouts painting of Elijah’s experiences as recorded in 1 Kings 18 and 19. Elijah’s exhaustion becomes a way of naming our own tiredness and frazzled state (stupor and stew)— be it through illness, overreaching, or dismay — and how God meets us in each. His journey from fire to whisper shows a God who sees, feeds, steadies, and gently reorients us. This invites us to drop our scripts, laugh, embrace rather than refuse joy, and stand in silence where renewal begins. Here is a faith journey that includes a rhythm of being seen, being held, and seeing God anew.
