This reading has led to all kinds of unhelpful and even harmful practises such as hierarchy, gender roles etc. But is there a different way to read this text? Is there a better story to be told? Of a God who’s not punishing, who takes the wrongdoing seriously, but whose posture is one of healing and restoration?
