There are so many things that could go wrong crossing Panama, heading up the Caribbean, pirates, probably? Then the boat DOES sink along with a crap-ton of gold. Fast forward to the 1980s when Tommy Gregory Thompson (treasure hunter, thief, crazy man) starts to find the gold!
