From their strongholds in Biloxi, Mississippi, and operations reaching into Louisiana, these loosely connected criminals operated with impunity for decades. At the heart of the story is one of their most infamous schemes: the "Lonely Hearts" scam run straight from Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. Dixie Mafia kingpin Kirksey Nix Jr. , serving life for murder, orchestrated the massive extortion racket from behind bars. The money flowed through a Biloxi law firm, but when funds went missing, Nix's paranoia led to a deadly betrayal. His alleged associates, including lawyer-turned-mayor Pete Halat , allegedly pointed the finger at Halat's law partner, Circuit Court Judge Vincent Sherry , and his wife, prominent Biloxi city councilwoman Margaret Sherry . On September 14, 1987, a hitman executed the couple in their own home in a cold-blooded double murder ordered from Angola.
