About this episode

The episode discusses healthcare in Wilcannia, featuring insights from local Clinical Nurse Educator Sam Elliott.

Today we continue our journey south through the Far West Local Health District, this time landing in Wilcannia. Wilcannia, known as the "Queen City of the West," is situated 200 km east of Broken Hill on the Darling/Barka River. Famous for it's 19th-century architecture and paddle steamers, Wilcannia served as a major transport hub in the 1880s. In the 1880s and 90s, Wilcannia was the third largest port in New South Wales (after Sydney and Morpeth), managing shipping for wool, wheat, and supplies. Today Sam Elliott joins us in the studio. Sam is a Clinical Nurse Educator for the Far West Local Health District and is a Wilcannia local with strong family ties to the Health Service. Join us each fortnight for a new episode where we showcase one of many dedicated and driven district staff members who strive to deliver excellent health care in the rural and remote locations of the Far West Local Health District. Hosted by Heidi Drenkhahn and produced by Juanita White for the Integrated Care Team, Far West Local Health District. Listener discretion is advised, as episodes may discuss or name Indigenous people who are deceased. Information provided in this podcast is correct…
