About this episode

The Mikes discuss the film 'Gravity', highlighting its intense survival story and strong performances.

This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes head into orbit with "Gravity", the Audience Choice winner for this season. Both Mike Butler and Mike Field really enjoy the film, and it is easy to see why it earned the audience vote. While it may not hit quite the same heights as that first IMAX 3D experience, "Gravity" still holds up as an intense and visually stunning survival story. Sandra Bullock carries the film almost entirely on her own, delivering a performance that keeps the tension grounded and the stakes personal. George Clooney adds a memorable and charismatic presence that helps balance the film’s more intense moments. The Mikes do have a couple of small nitpicks. Butler feels the film loses a bit of momentum toward the end of the second act, and Field is not a big fan of the repeated space station problem Bullock’s character has to face. Still, these are minor issues in an otherwise gripping and well-crafted film. Tense, immersive, and technically impressive, "Gravity" remains a standout survival story and a deserving Audience Choice selection. What's your favorite "realistic" sci-fi film?
