Johan Norberg is a historian of ideas, author, and Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute whose work explores the rise and fall of civilizations, the psychology of progress, and the cultural conditions that allow societies to flourish. In this conversation, we explore why great civilizations collapse, how fear changes cultures psychologically, why openness and intellectual risk-taking repeatedly produce golden ages, and what modern society can learn from Athens, Sparta, Renaissance Florence, Abbasid Baghdad, and the Dutch Republic.
