When he forces his way into the cargo hold, his flashlight finds a pale, many-jointed extraterrestrial body suspended in chains, its skin sweating black coolant that freezes before it hits the floor. The convoy’s panic becomes understandable when the refrigeration unit fails and the entity briefly wakes. Before it can speak, several contractors immediately turn their weapons on themselves, not out of loyalty but terror, as if hearing the creature’s voice would do something worse than kill them. A wounded contractor tells the trooper that the alien becomes docile near old nuclear test sites, which is why the route cuts through the Nevada desert instead of any sane transport corridor.
