The episode discusses the basics of the covenant made at Horeb and its significance in relation to the New Covenant through Jesus Christ.
The passage is the beginning of Moses' second sermon to the people of Israel across the Jordan. Moses begins to set the Law before the people of Israel to teach them its statues and rules that they might learn them, keep them, and thereby enjoy long life in the Promised Land. Moses' begins his sermon with a reminder of the basics of the covenant made at Horeb, the Ten Commandments. While the upcoming generation will prove faithful and enter the land to possess it, ultimately the text points us to the better mediatior, Jesus Christ, and his better covenant, the New Covenant! Only through jesus and the New Covenant in His blood are we promised and assured eternal life in the presence of God.
