Nine medications — eight prescribed in a three-week span. Psychiatric appointments that were virtual and lasted seventeen minutes. A hospital that told her she was overmedicated and misdiagnosed, then sent her home without follow-up. Her attorney offered to formally admit she was responsible for all three deaths if the judge would split the trial into two phases: guilt first, sanity second. The judge refused. Now the jury will hear the confession and the psychosis evidence at the same time. The judge also blocked other mothers from testifying about their own experiences with postpartum psychosis — ruling that medical experts can cover the condition adequately. Fifteen women had contacted the defense wanting to tell the jury they had heard the same kind of voices.
