Under immense pressure to solve the case, Icelandic police subjected suspects to hundreds of hours of interrogation, prolonged solitary confinement, sleep deprivation, and heavy sedation. Some prisoners became so psychologically broken they no longer trusted their own memories. Decades later, many Icelanders came to believe the confessions were entirely false — and in 2018, five of the six convictions were finally overturned by Iceland’s Supreme Court!
