The Padres suffered a dramatic collapse against the Nationals, losing 9-4 after leading 3-1.

The Padres looked like they were on their way to another series win Saturday in Washington. Xander Bogaerts got things started with a 417-foot solo homer in the second inning, Manny Machado added a blast in the fourth, and Fernando Tatis Jr. crushed a 451-foot moonshot in the fifth — his longest home run since 2021. Meanwhile, Michael King was absolutely dominant. King needed just 64 pitches through six innings, was carving up the Nationals lineup with every pitch in his arsenal, and appeared headed toward one of the most efficient starts of the season. The Padres led 3-1 and were in complete control. Then everything unraveled. Washington exploded for SIX runs in the seventh inning as the Padres defense, pitching and execution all broke down at once. A controversial force-play challenge, missed opportunities to end the inning, a hit batter, RBI hits, defensive miscues and a flood of Nationals baserunners turned a comfortable Padres lead into a 7-3 deficit. Manny Machado tried to bring the Padres back with an RBI double in the eighth, and San Diego loaded the bases after a huge overturned walk call to Bogaerts, but they couldn’t deliver the big hit they needed.
