The Holy Spirit Imagine standing before a blazing campfire on a freezing night. The fire offers everything you desperately need: warmth, light, and safety. Yet, out of fear that a stray spark might burn you, or because the smoke gets a little uncomfortable, you begin to dump buckets of water onto the flames. Soon, you are left standing in the dark, shivering in the cold, holding an empty bucket. This is the vivid image the Apostle Paul gives us when he warns against quenching the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not a passive force, a mechanical tool, or a spiritual commodity we can use to upgrade our lives or buy our way into power. He is a Person. He is God with us, acting as a wildfire of love, community, boldness, and transformation. Yet, because true transformation is uncomfortable—like the painful peeling away of dragon scales from Eustace in The Chronicles of Narnia—we often choose the illusion of control over the reality of intimacy. We quench the fire by letting fear talk over His gentle whispers of direction, stifling a prompt to step out in faith because it feels too risky.
