About this episode

This episode explores the 2001 reboot of Marvel's X-Men franchise through the lens of social and political themes.

The 90's were a bad decade for Marvel's Mutants, and it took some seismic changes and bold creative risks to save the franchise, the biggest being the 2001 reboot of the franchise - Ultimate X-Men! Marvel Comics hit the reset button and created a brand new imagining of Xavier, Magneto, Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey, and the rest of the X-Men’s huge cast of characters. Mark Millar and Andy Kubert re-imagined Marvel’s mutants and positioned them in the middle of a world in the shadow of the 9/11 attacks and waging a war that violated a lot of personal rights. Social and political satire wrapped up in a sci-fi package! Every month on Patreon we take a special deep-dive into a Marvel comic book, event, or timeline to examine all the highs and lows of the Marvel Universe. To celebrate our 6th Anniversary we’re releasing this episode from behind the paywall.
