On February 28th, 2026, the US and Israel launched over 900 air strikes on Iranian air defense and missile sites, after weeks of military buildups in the region, and at the time of this publication has escalated to over 2,000 individual targets struck in the past few days within Iran. Among the casualties was Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and in retaliation Iran launched drone and missile attacks against Tel Aviv and cities and US military bases in the surrounding Gulf States. Opinion around the world was extremely mixed, with many Iranian expats cheering the move, hoping for a return of the Shah, while many others condemned the attacks as flagrant aggression.
