Eric and I chewed over the week’s headlines, the way public discussion is policed by discomfort and fear, and why humour, blunt speech and a bit of old-fashioned English stubbornness still matter. We also wandered through nostalgia for simpler tech, cheap calls, basic Nokia handsets, and why so much of the modern world seems designed to irritate rather than serve people. In the second half, Juicy and Lucy joined me for a fascinating and at times jaw-dropping conversation sparked by Graham Moore’s appearance last week. They talked through how discovering the distinction between “English” and “British” reframed their whole outlook, and they shared their own bruising experiences with banks, mortgages, land registry problems and institutional stonewalling.
