The U.K. band The Pretty Things created what is arguably, the first concept album with a storyline, "S.F. Sorrow". In other words, the first rock opera. They began the recordings in 1967, but the album was released a year by their label EMI. The Summer of Love was over, and the concept was too new for rock audiences to take in, and so the album sold poorly.
