Die komplexe Optik des Teleskops kann trotz seines großen Bildwinkels mit seinem großen Spiegel tief ins Universum schauen. Ziel ist eine permanente Durchmusterung auf der Suche nach bisher unbekannten Konstellationen und Ereignissen. Das NASA-Projekt wird von zahlreichen Partnern unterstützt, unter anderem dem Astronomischen Rechen-Instituts (ARI) in Heidelberg.
