Washington's army had been routed at the Battle of Long Island. Nine thousand American soldiers were trapped on Brooklyn Heights with the British fleet waiting to close off their escape. Washington made the only decision available: retreat across the East River in small boats under cover of darkness. As dawn approached, thousands of soldiers remained on the Brooklyn shore. Daylight would expose them completely. Then the fog came in. A thick, heavy fog settled over Brooklyn Heights, so dense a man could not see ten feet in front of him. It covered the crossing completely. When the last boat, carrying Washington himself, pushed off from the shore, the fog began to lift. The British arrived at the water's edge to find nothing but empty boats. Every one of nine thousand men escaped. Not a single soldier was lost in the crossing. THE REFLECTION…
