He began it in the bitter winter of 1620 and wrote through the decades of struggle, loss, harvest, and hope that followed. Of Plymouth Plantation is not a political record. It is a testimony. Bradford wrote as a man who was absolutely certain that God was present in every moment, the devastating ones as much as the triumphant ones, and he wanted the generations that followed to know it. He recorded the deaths with grief, but never with despair. He recorded the harvests with gratitude, never with pride. When the colony struggled, he pointed to their failures of faith. When they flourished, he pointed to the mercy of God. There was no separation in Bradford's mind between the sacred and the secular, the spiritual and the political. All of it belonged to God.
