Welcomed with unexpected generosity, the couple finds temporary refuge among the town's inhabitants, including the quiet but alluring Deliverance ( Loring ) and the imposing patriarch Joseph ( Milland ). As John begins preaching to the townspeople, his sermons are met with extreme enthusiasm, seemingly revitalizing both his faith and his sense of purpose.
