Germany's media regulator says Google is a publisher   It's a real twist to longstanding convention. If it's generating AI summaries, then it's creating content, and that makes it a publisher, and with that comes all the liability of being a publisher too.   In the USA, search engines and platforms get immunity if they are hosting other people's content. Facebook isn't in control of what people post. Google is just showing search results. Well, that is until now. And if they're showing that AI generated output front and centre on search, then they need to be responsible for its accuracy. Google plans to appeal.
