The story of the two sons shows that both brothers are lost: the younger through rebellion and the older through self-righteousness. Yet the gracious father moves toward both sons with mercy, welcoming the repentant and inviting the proud into his joy. Jesus reveals the heart of God, whose grace reaches both the openly sinful and the outwardly religious.
