About this episode

Peggie Shangwa reflects on her evocative visit to the Cape Coast Slave Castle, guided by Justice K. Acquah, exploring the emotional and historical significance of the site.

I visited the historic Cape Coast Slave Castle and had the remarkable Justice K. Acquah as our tour guide. He absolutely does Justice to the tour and his passion is undeniable. He has been a tour guide at the Cape Coast for over a decade and some. This experience was very evocative for me, I found myself teetering between weeping, a feeling of asphyxiation and nausea at some point at the gruesome reality of what took place here. I share this talk because by the time we left I was able to see what lessons to take from the time we spent in the castle and I hope you will be provoked into some hard questions and conversations. The building struck me as a little girl trying to keep up appearances, its whitewashed exterior a facade of innocence. As I entered, the stark contrast between light and dark hit me with visceral force. The male slave dungeon, hidden beneath the pristine surface, was oppressively heavy, shrouded in darkness, and claustrophobically confining. The juxtaposition of the building's outward purity and its grim interior deeply haunting.
