This was followed by equally rapid deglaciation, or disappearance of the ice and correspondingly rapid rise in sea levels, sometimes to many feet higher than the present day. One study from 1977 used 8 cores extracted from the ocean bottom to examine changes in ancient ocean life to correlate temperature changes in the North Atlantic.
