As a footballer, he clocked up 161 matches with the Newcastle Knights, became a two-time NRL Premiership winner including the epic inaugural 1997 Grand Final, and added three NSW State of Origin appearances. Yet his athletic achievements in no way define the man. Away from the footy field, he is the driving force behind one of the most inspiring charities in Australia. After a harrowing diagnosis in 2013, the Mark Hughes Foundation was born. As of 2025, the Foundation has raised more than 35 million dollars and sold over one million Beanies for Brain Cancer. A remarkable story and journey. Mark acknowledges the incredible support of his family, close mates and the entire rugby league community. Raising millions for brain cancer research, Mark’s path is one of grit, bravery, purpose and perspective. This podcast is raw and emotional in parts and this superstar truly shines.
