I’m forty-four years old and pregnant with my eleventh baby, and as I have for two decades, I will be choosing undisturbed birth at home. The fact that I choose to give birth like a normal human being continues to provoke outrage, fear, and the predictable condemnation that arises anytime a woman defects from institutional control. The message I address in this video is not unique. Each week I receive variations of the same sentiment: women who declines obstetric surveillance, testing, and intervention should be punished if anything goes “wrong.” Beneath the veneer of concern lies the deeper accusation: to give birth outside the institution constitutes heresy against the cult of industrial medicine. That which is framed as “safety” is, in reality, a demand for obedience. The truth is simple: No diagnostic procedure or surveillance protocol is foolproof. No institution is risk-free. And no technological substitute exists for the physiological, spiritual, and relational integrity of undisturbed birth--for me.
