[Season 4, Episode 7] For new ideas to move forward, a society must have free speech. In addition, societies today have systems for new ideas (scientific research) to be presented and evaluated. But what happens when those well-established systems become corrupted—when they actually stand in the way of truth and advancement? This is now happening in our country's academic institutions, and many are completely unaware. "Publish or perish" and peer review have become roadblocks to truth and progress. Some scientists have seen their lives and reputations destroyed through the corrupted system. Others learn to jump through the hoops and work the system to accomplish their personal career goals. Yet others decide to leave the mainstream altogether in order to avoid a career spent trying to satisfy the system. Being outside the mainstream (and therefore self-published) has its own set of problems, but it does allow meaningful research to take place and the unadulterated, undiluted results to be published, albeit to a limited audience.
