About this episode
This episode explores the complexities of Nehemiah's story in the context of the Hebrew Bible and its implications for understanding the narrative leading up to Jesus.
Nehemiah. A corner of the Bible condemned by Christianity to be little more than a justification for church building campaigns or a last-minute devotional at men’s leadership retreats. But what if we’ve been reading his story completely wrong? This isn’t just a book about walls going up. It’s one of the last chapters in the narrative of the Hebrew Bible. It’s set in the aftermath of exile, at the beginning of the Second Temple period, shaping a world that will still be standing when Jesus shows up 400+ years later. And Nehemiah himself? Not the clean-cut hero we’ve been handed. Read closely, especially alongside the rest of Scripture, he starts to look a lot more complicated… maybe even like an antihero. But before we go there, we have to do the groundwork. Because Nehemiah is one of those books where we don’t just miss a few details; we miss the entire point without knowing history behind it. This episode is all about the stuff you don’t know you don’t know about the life and times of Nehemiah. And once you see it, you can’t unsee it. This is Nehemiah uncut and unfiltered. Website…
