About this episode

This episode explores the events surrounding Manifest Destiny and the American West, focusing on key figures like Sam Houston and James K. Polk.

An assault on a congressman in Washington launches a chain of events that would permanently redraw the map of North America.  This episode traces the remarkable rise of Sam Houston from his Cherokee roots, political scandal, and exile, through the Alamo, San Jacinto, and the fight over Texas annexation.  Then President James K. Polk turns Manifest Destiny into war, sending American armies deep into Mexico over protests from critics in Congress calling out the bloodshed.  And an unknown State Department clerk defies the White House in negotiating the treaty that secures the vast American Southwest, setting America on a collision course with itself.
