About this episode

Neil Crawford discusses the importance of communication in youth soccer and the responsibilities of coaches and clubs.

The comments from my last episode were too good to ignore so I came back for a follow-up. I also had a quick correction to make — I said "game model" last time, I meant "gaming program." Not the same thing. I push back on the idea that this situation is automatically a culture problem. It may just be a communication problem — and those are very different things. One is fixable, the other is a reason to leave. Don't conflate the two until you know more. I also get into what I actually believe the coach's role should be — and I break down nine things that need to be in place for a club to have real standards. Not just the word on a website, but things you can actually point to and measure. If your club can't check most of those boxes, what you have isn't standards — it's just rules that get enforced when it's convenient.
