Over the July Fourth weekend, nuclear startup company Aalo Atomics brought a reactor to criticality at Idaho National Laboratory. The reactor was manufactured in roughly forty days. That is an extraordinary achievement, but the real story is not the stopwatch. The real story is the system behind it. The first enabling technology is the coolant. Conventional reactors use water under high pressure. High pressure demands thick reactor vessels, specialized forgings, heavy components, and a supply chain with very few qualified manufacturers.
