When the pilot prepared to fire an AIM-9 missile, the weapons-control system reportedly failed. The mystery continued after sunrise, when a helicopter search near a dry lake bed detected an unexplained beeper signal close to a small house whose occupants recalled a loud noise and a brilliant flash during the night.
