Viswamitra brought Ram and Lakshman to King Janak's palace to see the divine bow of Shiva . Janak declared that only the man who could string the bow would marry his daughter, Sita . Ram effortlessly lifted and then shattered the mighty bow while trying to string it. Ram married Sita, and his brothers Lakshman, Bharat, and Shatrughna married Urmila, Mandavi, and Shrutakirti , respectively. On their return to Ayodhya, they encountered the fearsome sage Parashuram , whose bow Ram also strung and released an arrow from, humbling the sage.
