# The Rumble in the Jungle Gets Its Date: May 3, 1974 On May 3, 1974, one of the most audacious plans in sports history was officially announced to the world: Muhammad Ali and George Foreman would fight for the heavyweight championship of the world in Kinshasa, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo). The event would become immortalized as "The Rumble in the Jungle." The press conference that day was pure theater, which was fitting given that the fight's promoter was Don King, a former Cleveland numbers runner turned boxing impresario who was making his first big splash on the world stage. King had somehow convinced the president of Zaire, Mobutu Sese Seko, to put up a then-staggering $10 million purse (with each fighter guaranteed $5 million) to host the fight in his country.
