Pastor JD Small discusses the theme of total surrender in relation to Jesus' teachings, particularly focusing on the rich young ruler's story.
Join Pastor JD Small for Week 2 of Jesus Said What? A message on one of Jesus’ hardest teachings: total surrender. Through the rich young ruler (Matthew 19:16–30), we see that Jesus isn’t asking us to be poor, but to be fully surrendered. The man had everything, wealth, status, devotion, yet walked away sad when Jesus exposed what truly ruled his heart. This isn’t about money; it’s about whatever we value more than God. We also explore cognitive dissonance, why challenge feels uncomfortable and why we often choose rationalization over real change. Even doing the “right” things, we can still live unsurrendered. The call is to identify your “one thing” what you’d struggle to give up, and begin releasing it. Surrender isn’t instant; it’s a process of grace, choosing daily to let go of what competes with God.
