“It’s not how you look, but who you are.” “Don’t judge people by appearance!” I am broadcasting from Australia. I had a heart-to-heart talk about the importance of not judging by appearances. One Australian mother showed me a photo of her grown-up son—a muscular man with tattoos. But beneath that appearance is the most delicate, kind soul. She shared how he once tried to save his dinner when he was young and bring it to a homeless person he met while traveling in the US. It reminded me of my son’s friends since he went to an international school – though his friends may look tall and strong western men, they are incredibly gentle and sensitive inside. They may not look Japanese, but they grew up in Japan, and their heart is truly Japanese. Connecting over these shared stories was so heartwarming.
