Originally from Argentina and trained first as a biologist (with a minor in zoology), he completed his PhD in exercise physiology and nutrition at RMIT University in Melbourne, then spent roughly three years as a postdoctoral researcher at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences before moving to Liverpool. His research centers on training–nutrition interactions in humans — how manipulating carbohydrate, protein, fat, and overall energy availability shapes adaptation to training and physical performance. In recent years his work has focused on the endocrine, metabolic, and physiological effects of energy deficiency, including the first dynamic proteomic profiling of how human skeletal muscle responds to a short-term energy deficit combined with exercise.
