In Part One of Buried At Sea: Abuse, Power & Accountability , UNCENSORED host Marién Sarriera speaks with maritime lawyer, advocate, and former seafarer Ryan Melogy for the first episode of a three-part special series examining abuse, silence, retaliation, and accountability across the maritime industry. Ryan is known today for his maritime legal work, advocacy, and involvement in challenging the systems that allow harassment, assault, and abuse at sea to continue. But before becoming a lawyer and advocate in this space, Ryan spent nearly two decades at sea. He sailed on 22 vessels, held an unlimited tonnage chief mate licence, served eight years as an officer in the US Navy Reserve, and experienced first-hand the culture he now works to challenge. In this episode, Ryan shares what happened aboard the Maersk Idaho, where he says sexual harassment began within minutes of meeting a new chief mate and escalated into physical assault, abuse of cadets, psychological harm, and a formal report that should have triggered accountability.
