It does not call us to absorb wounds silently or minimize our own wellbeing for the sake of keeping the peace. What it calls us to is something harder and more honest than that. Humility. Gentleness. Patience. Bearing with one another in love. These are the words Paul reaches for when describing how to navigate the inevitable friction of life shared closely with other people. And every one of those words describes how Jesus already relates to us. Patient with our slowness to change. Gentle with our failures.
