And the third day He will rise again.” Matthew 20:19 “and they will surrender Him to the Gentiles unto the ‘mock, and flog, and crucify’, and the third day, He will rise up.” (CG) In the previous verse, Jesus reminded His twelve that in going up to Jerusalem, He would be betrayed to the chief priests and scribes who would condemn Him to death. He finishes this thought, saying, “and they will surrender Him to the Gentiles.” Despite the chief priests and scribes condemning Jesus to death, they did not have the authority to crucify Him. As such, the gospels bear out that they went to the Gentiles to have the sentence against Jesus executed. Once in Gentile hands, however, there was more that would be expected. He was delivered “unto the ‘mock, and flog, and crucify’.” For the first time, Jesus specifically notes the means by which He would be killed. It is a new word, stauroó, to impale. But that must be understood not as being pierced through the entire body, but through parts of the body, being affixed to something, such as a cross, pole, wall, etc. In the case of Jesus’ coming crucifixion…
