The episode discusses the reaction of the ten apostles to the request made by James and John regarding their positions in Jesus' kingdom.
Friday, 12 June 2026 And when the ten heard it, they were greatly displeased with the two brothers. Matthew 20:24 “And having heard, the ten, they outraged about the two brothers.” (CG). In the previous verse, Jesus informed the sons of Zebedee that they would indeed drink His cup and be baptized with His baptism. However, He informed them that to sit at His right and left was not His to give, but for those prepared by His Father. With those words complete, it next says, “And having heard, the ten.” This means the other ten apostles who had been called aside in verse 17, and who would have included Matthew, the one writing about what occurred. Of them, it says, “they outraged about the two brothers.” A new word is seen, aganakteó, to be greatly indignant. It is only seen seven times, all in the synoptic gospels. One can see them missing the point of Jesus’ words and being upset that James and John asked for this honorable seating at their expense. Apparently, they all had the same aspiration and didn’t like that these two stepped forward, bringing their mother to sweeten the deal.
