As a young, single mother in Santa Barbara, she founded and led a progressive, multi-million-dollar nonprofit that transformed the lives of people with severe developmental disabilities. She created supported-living homes, staffed twenty-four hours a day, where dignity replaced institutionalization. She launched a state and federally licensed day program. She recruited a team of fifty-five staff members and a full management structure. She did all of this without money, without a college education, without a roadmap. Only passion, grit, and an unshakable calling to change lives. Then her thirties came for her. And they did not come gently.
