What if that feeling isn't depression, and instead it is something far older—and far more human? In this week's Field-Reading, I introduce the first layer of Weltschmerz, what I call Mother Earth's Own Grief—the philosophical ache that sensitive people have carried throughout history. It is the grief that arises when we see suffering, injustice, disconnection, and the loss of our humanity with a clarity that others may not experience in the same way. Throughout this week I have encountered Weltschmerz everywhere—in public service, mentoring, coaching, regression therapy, and in ordinary conversations. Again and again I meet people who believe something is wrong with them because they feel so deeply, when what they are actually carrying is a profound sensitivity to the human condition itself. Those who feel the gap between what is and what could be have often become the artists, philosophers, reformers, and visionaries who help humanity evolve.
