In our movement toward celebrating Pentecost we are examining the Old Testament texts quoted by Peter the Apostle in his powerful Acts 2 message to those gathered in Jerusalem as the gift of the Holy Spirit fell upon Jesus’ followers. This Sunday we will be examining Psalm 110, which Peter quotes from to demonstrate Jesus’ fulfillment of a long-held hope of King David and the Hebrew people for a coming king who would be seated in glory: “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool."' Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.” (Acts 2: 34-36) This image from Psalm 110 was beloved by New Testament writers, but long before Peter, it had a powerful original context and meaning—one that can speak to us today as people living in hope, marked by the resurrection life of Jesus and animated by the power of God’s Spirit.
