Mark Bohle discusses his artistic practice centered around drawing and the process of creating his Pica Pica books.
Today on Graphic Matter, I’m speaking with Mark Bohle, a designer and artist whose practice moves between drawing, graphic design, painting and teaching. I met Mark in Barcelona, where he’s been based for the past ten years. What I find interesting in his work is that everything seems to start from drawing. And he says it himself, drawing is really at the center of his practice. Not in a precious way, but as something very direct, almost everyday. You just start, without overthinking, without anticipating. In this episode, we talk about drawing as a way of thinking, about tools, formats and process, and about letting go of the idea of inspiration. For Mark, and his now well-known sketchbooks, it’s really about repetition and failure. We also talk about his collaborative work with Nam, and about editing hundreds of drawings for his books Pica Pica , published with Handshake. How do you go through that amount of material? How do you select only a few drawings? And how do you turn that into a book? I hope you enjoy this episode!
