A circular economy is a model of resource production and consumption in any economy and it involves reusing, refurbishing and recycling of existing materials. In most homes, women pay a critical role in the reuse of materials ensuring that most materials are not discarded as waste. Within the waste management value chain, women are mostly involved in the informal waste management sector with no commensurable wages for them. Their inability to participate in policy formulation, limited financial and technical resources and the burden of unpaid care work limits their participation in this sector. The Build Her a Future Campaign in the DRC is bringing some awareness to the subject calling for more participation of women in this economy and also equal access to opportunities within the sector.
